Thailand anticipates a rise in rice exports to Hong Kong and China this year, focusing on specialty grains like riceberry and brown rice, spurred by global economic recovery and increasing demand for high-quality rice. Efforts to strengthen market presence include plans to establish a distribution center in Shenzhen. The Rice Merchants’ Association of Hong Kong and China Merchants Godown, Wharf & Transportation Co discussed with Thailand's Commerce Minister the country's R&D initiatives to enhance rice quality and meet diverse consumer preferences, aiming to stay competitive in the global rice market.
Hong Kong is expected to import around 180,000 tonnes of Thai rice this year, marking a significant increase from the 150,000 tonnes imported last year, with Thai jasmine rice being the primary import. The Thai Commerce Ministry is exploring the establishment of a distribution center in Shenzhen to support this growth, with discussions ongoing regarding land leasing and further collaboration with the Chinese government.
Hong Kong, serving as the third-largest export market for Thai jasmine rice, imported 257,200 tonnes of rice last year, with a major share from Thailand. The Rice Merchants’ Association of Hong Kong has expressed continued interest in Thai rice, citing confidence in its quality and standards. With the Thai government targeting a 7.5 million tonnes rice export goal by 2024, the partnership between Hong Kong rice importers and the Thai Rice Exporters Association remains strong, ensuring fair pricing and supply under Hong Kong's controlled scheme for rice, a staple food commodity.
