The Sirsa administration has forecasted a significant increase in wheat procurement for the upcoming rabi marketing season, starting April 1, with an estimated 9,50,000 metric tonnes (MT), marking an 18% increase from last year's figures. Deputy Commissioner RK Singh emphasized the importance of seamless coordination among officials and procurement associations to facilitate hassle-free procurement processes at mandis and centers, ensuring that farmers face no difficulties in selling their produce.
The region has seen early arrivals of mustard crop since March 10, with official procurement set to commence on March 26. Expectations of a doubled mustard production from the previous year have led to the establishment of four new procurement centers, raising the total to 63 in the district. These preparations come in anticipation of a significant influx of mustard in the markets, with the tender process for procurement still underway.
In the 2023-24 season, Sirsa district procured a total of 8,07,003 metric tonnes of wheat, which was directly supplied to the Food Corporation of India (FCI), indicating a well-established procurement and storage system. The district has sown wheat over 2,72,360 hectares, expecting around 1,500,000 metric tonnes of production, with an estimated 9,50,000 MT to be received at the mandis. Mustard cultivation covers 85,200 hectares, projecting a production of 1,70,400 metric tonnes and an anticipated market arrival of 95,000 metric tonnes.
