The province of Chanthaburi, a vital fruit-producing region in Thailand, annually produces around 500,000 tonnes of durian alone. The recent high market prices for Monthong durian underscore the demand and onset of the fruit season. To maintain quality and prevent the sale of unripe fruit, growers are required to obtain harvesting permits. Commerce Minister Phumtham Wechayachai has highlighted the ministry's commitment to supporting durian exports through various Chinese customs checkpoints, aiming to enhance market access and sustain the export momentum.
In 2023, Thailand's export of fruits, including fresh, chilled, frozen, and dried varieties, amounted to 238 billion baht, with durian and mangosteen exports contributing significantly to this figure. Chanthaburi, being a major fruit hub, accounts for a large portion of the national production, especially in durians and mangosteens, with China being the primary export destination. The ministry's proactive approach includes managing the supply chain, promoting domestic and foreign marketing, and addressing legal aspects to ensure quality and boost the export potential of Thai fruits in the international market.
