Nestlé Announces Closure of Nicaraguan Plant Amidst Regional Operational Shift

Nestlé, a Swiss multinational food company, announced the closure of its milk processing plant, Prolacsa, in Matagalpa, Nicaragua, with plans to transfer its manufacturing operations to other Latin American factories. This decision is part of a strategic regional shift to enhance operational efficiency and productivity. Despite the plant's closure, Nestlé will continue its commercial operations and management in Nicaragua, including the purchase of green coffee for its global operations and engagement in local development programs.

The closure of the Prolacsa plant, which has been operational for 55 years, follows recent closures of major companies in Nicaragua, affecting the country's national production and export income. These include the shutdown of Cisa Exportadora, the largest coffee collector, processor, and exporter in Nicaragua, and the departure of the Mexican Group Lala, a food and beverage company.

Nestlé's continued commitment to Nicaragua includes maintaining its commercial operations and distribution center, purchasing 13% of Nicaraguan coffee production, participating in the Forests of Tomorrow environmental program, and impacting over 5,000 people through its corporate presence. In 2019, the company invested six million dollars in expanding the production capacity of the Prolacsa plant.
