South Korean food company Paldo Co. announced its plan to export a traditional Korean sweet rice beverage, Birak Shikhye, to Indonesia with halal certification, targeting the local halal food market. This beverage, often served as a dessert, will soon be available in Indonesian discount store chains and supermarkets. The Halal Product Assurance Organizing Agency (BPJPH) in Indonesia has granted the necessary certification for Paldo's Shikhye, as stated in the company's recent press release.
Paldo had previously achieved halal certification for its Shikhye product in June of the previous year. This move follows the company's successful certification in 2018 for its Pororo kids' drinks, which were also marketed in Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim-majority country. The company's strategy focuses on expanding its presence in the halal food sector, which adheres to the dietary standards set by Islamic Sharia law.
Looking ahead, Paldo aims to obtain halal certification for its range of ramyeon products, including popular items like Paldo Bibimmyeon, Paldo doshirak, and Paldo Wangttugeong cup ramyeon. This ambition aligns with Indonesia's upcoming policy, set to be implemented from October, which mandates halal certification for all imported food items, with the exception of fresh agricultural products.
