The Odisha government has delivered 22.48 lakh tonnes of rice against the target of 36.36 lakh tonnes from December 2022 to January 2024 to the Food Corporation of India (FCI). For the kharif marketing season (KMS) of 2023-24, from December 2023 to January 2024, the state provided only 1.06 lakh tonnes of rice, falling short of the 3.25 lakh tonne target.
During the 2022-23 KMS, up to January 3, 2024, Odisha delivered a total of 53.85 lakh tonnes of custom milled rice (CMR) to the central pool, of which 44.18 lakh tonnes were parboiled rice. As a decentralised procurement (DCP) state, Odisha retained 31.37 lakh tonnes for its own needs (7.51 lakh tonnes raw rice and 23.86 lakh tonnes parboiled rice), and the remaining 22.48 lakh tonnes were delivered to FCI.
The Union Minister informed that FCI has adequate storage space for surplus CMR from the state and is prompt in evacuating rice from Odisha. The Centre permitted the state government to deliver an additional 10 lakh tonnes of fortified parboiled rice during the 2023-24 KMS. Additionally, it was approved to lift an extra 10 lakh tonnes of parboiled rice from Odisha following a request by Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan last month.
