Vizhinjam International Seaport Nears Trial Operations with Crane Installation Process

The Vizhinjam International Seaport in India is progressing towards trial operations for Phase I, aiming for commencement by April. The installation of 11 yard cranes and four ship-to-shore cranes has begun, with nine cranes already in place. The India unit of Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Company Limited (ZPMC) is overseeing the installation. The positioning of the cranes is crucial for their efficiency, and their functionality will be examined using various parameters.

Once operational, the port is expected to attract approximately 50% of international shipping traffic, positioning itself as a transshipment hub. The port's unique features, including a depth of over 20 meters and proximity to the international shipping channel (11 nautical miles away), make it strategically advantageous. Anticipated benefits include job creation for around 5,000 people initially, with additional opportunities in various sectors and indirect businesses associated with the port.
