South Africa and Japan have recently concluded the protocol for shipping South African avocados to the Japanese market, with the first shipments anticipated in June. This process involves registrations, farm and packing plant inspections, and ensuring the avocados meet the required ripeness for the mandated cold treatment protocol (2°C for 19 days). Avocado harvesting begins in South Africa as early as February, with initial shipments to the European Union and the United Kingdom commencing in March.
This access to the Japanese market, Southeast Asia's largest avocado importer (consuming 100,000 tons annually), serves as a valuable diversification strategy for South African avocado producers. Currently, 95% of South Africa's avocado exports are absorbed by the European Union and the UK. The move to tap into Japan offers an opportunity to expand market reach, potentially leading to increased export volumes and revenue diversification. The finalized protocol marks a positive development for South African avocado exports, enhancing their global market presence.
