Peru Implements Phytosanitary Requirements for Tomato Seed Imports from 29 Countries

Senasa, the National Agrarian Health Service, has implemented phytosanitary requirements for the importation of tomato seeds (Solanum lycopersicum) from 29 specified countries for a period of 360 days. The approved countries include Australia, Chile, China, both Koreas, the United States, several European nations like France, Germany, and the Netherlands, among others. To import tomato seeds, an official phytosanitary import permit from Senasa, obtained prior to shipment in the origin country, is mandatory.

The imported tomato seed shipments must be accompanied by an official phytosanitary certificate from the exporting country. This certificate should include specific additional declarations regarding the health and treatment of the seeds. The packaging for these seeds must be new, clean, and properly labeled with details like the product name, batch number, and country of origin, ensuring no contamination or mix-up with unapproved materials.

Upon arrival in Peru, the seed shipments will undergo a stringent phytosanitary inspection at the entry point. Senasa inspectors will collect samples for analysis at the Senasa Plant Health Diagnostic Center Unit, with the shipment being held until the analysis results are available. The financial responsibility for these diagnostic tests falls on the importer. This rigorous process, detailed in Directorial Resolution No. D000009-2024-Midagri-Senasa-DSV, aims to protect Peru’s agricultural integrity while facilitating international trade in tomato seeds.
