Plum harvest 6.5% below previous year's level in Germany

 

In 2023, Germany experienced a plum and plum harvest of 43,800 tons, marking a 6.5% decline from the previous year and a 3.7% drop compared to the ten-year average. Weather challenges, pest infestation, and fruit splitting due to rain led to losses in certain regions. Notably, 86.5% of the harvested plums (37,900 tons) were marketed as table fruit, emphasizing their significance. Only 9.9% (4,300 tons) were utilized as commercial or industrial fruit, while 3.6% (1,600 tons) fell into the "not marketed" category. Key federal states for plum harvest were Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate, contributing 62.3% to the German plum harvest. Overall, apples constituted 88.1% of the total tree fruit harvest in 2023, with plums and plums accounting for 4.1%, alongside other fruits like pears, sweet cherries, sour cherries, mirabelle plums, and reneclodes.
