Spain Allocates €21.4 Million to Curb Grape Oversupply, Aid Winegrowers

The Spanish Government has allocated 21.4 million euros for the implementation of the green harvest in vineyards for winemaking in 2024. This action, part of the Wine Sector Intervention (ISV) under the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), aims to adjust the 2024 grape harvest to align with storage and marketing capacities, thereby preventing the negative effects of potential grape oversupply and falling incomes for winegrowers.

The resolution to activate this measure was published in the Official State Gazette (BOE) and came in response to requests from four autonomous communities. It is designed to help balance the wine market. Autonomous communities are required to announce calls for green harvest aid and set the application deadline, which must be submitted by April 30, 2024, at the latest. The green harvest must be completed by July 15, 2024.

Furthermore, by March 1, 2024, autonomous communities must inform the Ministry of Agriculture of their chosen payment method, the maximum value limits, and the priority criteria to be applied within their territories for the green harvest initiative.
