New Zealand Grapples with Apple Shortage: Cyclone Gabrielle Adds Bite to Seasonal Scarcity

New Zealand is experiencing a shortage of apples, particularly varieties like Royal Gala, Simply Red, and Rose, with Granny Smiths being the primary available type. This scarcity has led to concerns among consumers, similar to the previous kūmara shortage and rising watermelon prices. The lack of apples is attributed to the conclusion of the nationwide apple harvest season, and Countdown suggests that prices are expected to decrease as the new season, starting with Royal Gala apples from Gisborne, approaches. However, a stall owner mentioned the challenge of obtaining apples, necessitating stockpiling due to difficulties in sourcing them.

Cyclone Gabrielle is identified as a contributing factor to the shortage, affecting nearly half of the apple crop in Hawke's Bay, causing destruction and submergence of trees. The aftermath of the cyclone has disrupted the usual flow of apples from storage to market. In contrast, the shortage of watermelons is explained by the beginning of their season requiring hot and dry conditions for optimal growth. Despite the current scarcity, industry experts assure consumers that their favorite fruits will return to shelves soon as the seasons transition.
