Irish Food and Drink Exports to the UK Surge to €5.6 Billion in 2023

In 2023, Irish food and drink exports to the UK experienced significant growth, reaching €5.6 billion, marking a substantial increase of €800 million (16.7%) from 2022, as reported by Bord Bia. The UK continues to be Ireland's primary export partner, constituting 34% of the nation's total export share, with the meat and livestock sector playing a pivotal role. Notably, Irish beef exports to the UK saw a substantial increase, reaching an estimated €1.4 billion, signifying a 10% YoY rise and expanding the UK market's share to 47%, up from 44% in 2022.

Several sectors contributed to this positive trend, with packaged consumer food exports rising to €2 billion and drinks exports reaching €336 million, reflecting a 19% increase compared to 2022. However, Irish dairy exports experienced a decline in value from €1.2 billion to €1.1 billion.

While horticulture and cereals witnessed a volume decrease, there was a rise in sales value, particularly driven by mushrooms, which accounted for nearly 50% of the total export value.

Despite facing challenges such as inflation, a cost-of-living crisis, and downward pressure on trade prices, the Irish food and drink industry remains resilient, with the UK partnership playing a crucial role. Bord Bia is actively engaged in strategic planning to address concerns related to market volatility and inflation. Despite these challenges, 73% of Irish food and drink exporters express optimism for robust market growth in 2024.
