Indian Coconut Sector Sees Recovery as Prices Climb after Two Years

The coconut industry is showing signs of recovery after experiencing a prolonged period of price decline. The price of green coconuts has reached Rs 31.50 per kilogram after over two years, with some areas even seeing prices as high as Rs 32.50—just Rs 1.50 less than the minimum support price. Simultaneously, copra prices are at Rs 10,250 per quintal, while good-quality native copra is priced at Rs 10,500, slightly below the support price of Rs 11,160. For an extended period, green coconut prices ranged from Rs 25-28, but in January of this year, they crossed the Rs 30 mark. The last time such prices were observed was in December 2021 when copra was priced at Rs 10,000. However, in January 2022, copra prices dropped to Rs 9,300, further declining to Rs 7,800 in October. In May 2023, green coconut prices hit a low of Rs 21 per kilogram. Traders attribute the recent price increase to a reduction in coconut production. E. Sasindran, chairman of Vadakara Coconut company, noted a decline in coconut supply. Although the situation is not ideal for coconut farmers, given the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) preparing to auction stocked copra, the price surge does provide a ray of hope. In 2023, a total of 84,272 tons of copra have been procured from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh. NAFED plans to auction 97,272 tons of copra, including 13,000 tons stockpiled in 2022. The auction will be conducted in phases to mitigate adverse effects on the market. The World Bank Commodity Market Outlook for April 2023 anticipates a promising year for the coconut market, projecting that the price of coconut oil will reach $1,300 per ton. Additionally, prices of other vegetable oils are expected to rise proportionately. This positive outlook comes after a period of challenges faced by coconut farmers due to fluctuating prices and supply-demand imbalances. The recent price surge brings a sense of relief to the coconut farming community, offering the potential for improved economic conditions.
