Heatwave Withers Tomatoes: Palacode Market Sees Supply Plummet, Prices Skyrocket

The Palacode wholesale market in Dharmapuri, a major hub for tomato distribution in Tamil Nadu and neighboring states, is experiencing a drastic drop in tomato supply due to severe summer heat. Where the market typically sees daily arrivals of around 100 tonnes of tomatoes, figures have plummeted to less than three tonnes, causing prices to surge from Rs 7-10 per kg to Rs 26-30 per kg. The extreme weather conditions have led to widespread crop damage, prompting farmers to call for governmental compensation.

Dharmapuri, a significant contributor to Tamil Nadu's tomato production, has seen its output severely affected by the early onset of high temperatures, exceeding 41 degrees Celsius, and drought-like conditions. These adverse weather events have arrived earlier than usual, impacting the region's agricultural rhythm and financial stability of farmers. With cultivation costs ranging from Rs 18,000 to Rs 25,000 per acre and expected yields drastically reduced, the agricultural community is facing substantial financial strain.

The local government's horticulture department, represented by deputy director Fathima, acknowledges the unusual severity of the situation but states that a formal assessment of crop damage will only be possible in June. While steps are being taken to mitigate the impact on supply, the current scenario underscores the vulnerability of agriculture to climate variability and the need for timely support and strategic planning to safeguard the livelihoods of farmers and stabilize market prices.
