Rising Food Prices in Malang: Chilies, Eggs, and Other Essentials See Sharp Increases

In Malang, residents are facing a substantial rise in food prices. The price of chilies has seen a dramatic increase, reaching IDR 90,000 per kilogram, almost a 100% increase from the earlier price of around IDR 40,000 per kg. Alongside chilies, chicken egg prices have soared to IDR 30,000 per kg. Additionally, the cost of other essential items like chicken, which is now IDR 35,000, and red onions, have also experienced a hike. Although there was a slight decrease in the price of small red chilies from IDR 75,000 to IDR 60,000, the overall trend in food prices remains upward. This escalation has significantly impacted the turnover of vegetable and staple food traders in the region, leading to a reduction in their stock of meats and fish due to the increased prices and lower consumer purchasing power.
