Morocco Surpasses Spain to Become EU's Second Largest Tomato Supplier


 In 2023, Morocco became the second largest tomato supplier to the European Union (EU), only behind the Netherlands, surpassing Spain. The report, based on Euroestacom (ICEX-Eurostat) data and TARIC codes, highlights changes in the tomato supply market over the last five years. Only Turkey and Morocco have increased their market share in the EU for tomatoes, with increases of 147.28% and 18.86%, respectively, while Spain and the Netherlands saw their shares decrease by -25.2% and -18.62%.


The EU purchased 2,643.83 million kilos of tomatoes in 2023, a -3.21% decrease from 2019, with a total value of 5,091.73 million euros and an average price of 1.93 euros per kilo.


- The Netherlands sold 650.74 million kilos of tomatoes to the EU in 2023, which is 24.61% of the total, but 148.92 million kilos less than in 2019.

- Morocco supplied 491.91 million kilos, an increase of 78.06 million kilos from 2019.

- Spain, now in third place, sold 462.66 million kilos, 155.85 million kilos less than in 2019.

- Turkey's sales were 248.76 million kilos, up by 148.16 million kilos from 2019.


Financially, the Netherlands' tomato sales in the EU reached 1,331.75 million euros in 2023, with an average price of 2.05 euros per kilo. Spain maintained the second position in terms of revenue with 981.64 million euros, with an average price of 2.12 euros per kilo. Morocco's sales were valued at 971.7 million euros, with an average price of 1.98 euros per kilo. Turkey's sales value increased to 332 million euros, with an average price of 1.33 euros per kilo.
