Delay and Protests: Cotton Purchase Commences Late in Adilabad Market Yard

The purchase of cotton at the Adilabad market yard faced delays, commencing almost five hours later than scheduled, leading to protests by farmers and a refusal by traders to buy cotton. Adilabad BJP MLA Payal Shankar and Additional Collector Shyamala Devi intervened, engaging in discussions with officials and traders to resolve the tense situation. The market, closed on Thursday, saw a surge of farmers arriving with their cotton produce, resulting in around 2,500 vehicles in the market yard. Despite the scheduled 8 am start for cotton purchase, it did not begin until the afternoon, prompting farmers to protest, demanding additional charges for waiting time and government intervention in the purchase process.

Traders, citing a lorry shortage, refused purchases, citing an inability to clear cotton storage from ginning industries. The Cotton Traders Association president highlighted consistent increases in transportation prices over the last three years, with this time's Rs 4,000 increase making transportation from Adilabad to Guntur cost Rs 41,000. Adilabad MLA Payal Shankar and Additional Collector Shyamala Devi intervened, urging parties to bring problems to the notice of the administration and state government to ensure farmers don't suffer from increased transportation charges.
