Kaji Nemu Takes Center Stage: Declared Assam's Official State Fruit

Agriculture Minister Atul Bora has announced that 'Citrus Limon' (Kaji Nemu) is now the state fruit of Assam, as declared in the state Assembly following a Cabinet meeting. This decision is aimed at highlighting the agricultural significance of Kaji Nemu, a fruit known for its distinct aroma and antioxidant properties, and boosting its prominence both in local and international markets. The fruit, which is an integral part of Assamese cuisine and known for its medicinal benefits, carries the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag.

In Assam, 15.90 hectares of land are devoted to cultivating Kaji Nemu. The state has been actively involved in the commercial growth and export of the fruit, with markets extending to several countries, including those in the Middle East. The designation of Kaji Nemu as the state fruit is expected to open more opportunities for global export and revenue generation, aligning with the government's efforts to promote local agriculture and enhance self-dependency in the state.

With about 70,000 units of Kaji Nemu already exported abroad, the fruit has established a strong presence in the international market. The official recognition as the state fruit is anticipated to further strengthen this presence, showcasing Assam's agricultural capabilities globally. The move to declare Kaji Nemu as the state fruit reflects the state's commitment to celebrating its agricultural heritage and potential for growth in the agricultural sector.
