Morocco Expects Growth in Citrus Production for 2023/24 Despite Export Challenges

Morocco's citrus production is projected to increase in the 2023/24 fiscal year, with tangerine output expected to reach 950,000 tons (a 3% rise from 2022/23), orange production to reach 820,000 tons (a 5% increase), and lemon/lime production estimated at 40,000 tons.

Despite citrus production remaining below historical averages, favorable weather conditions and increased use of drip irrigation techniques contribute to the rise. Tangerine exports are anticipated to dip slightly to approximately 450,000 tons due to elevated domestic prices, while orange exports are expected to reach 50,000 tons, and lemon/lime exports, 7,000 tons.

The export season, commencing in mid-November, faced a delay in fruit ripening. Major export markets for Morocco include the European Union and Russia. Notably, farmers in the upcoming season are prioritizing the domestic market, influenced by high transportation costs, stiff competition from Egypt, and attractive domestic prices.
